The totals of their fundraiser are finally in. The twins each sold enough that they both get to participate in a special prize – a Hummer Limousine ride to a local pizza place with the principal at lunch time.
They are obviously very excited and it reinforces the lesson that hard work pays off. I say “reinforces” because they already understood that their hard work (going door to door and selling online), and working hard allowed them to obtain a large number of sales.
Another great lesson was the fact that they do not keep the profit – it is for a good cause, to raise money for their school system. Not only do they benefit, but everyone presently at the school and those to follow will benefit as well. Helping their community is a great lesson.
And of course, my personal favorite was to get them interested in the online economy. By creating their own site, obtaining a following, and promoting the sale of items for the fundraiser they were able to meet their goals.

Thanks to everyone who assisted and sent them kind words of encouragement.

The twins could not be happier and I could not be prouder. Two lessons they have learned so far are door to door sales and online sales.
They now have their own blog, this site, and enjoy making posts each day which we call their “pick of the day”. Online communication and online sales is not an easy thing to understand, nor master, and they are eager to learn. The fact that individuals have ordered online using this online site has helped keep them excited and motivated, so thanks and please continue to pass the link to those you know as the competition lasts until October 8th.
They also have been going door to door and making in person sales. Learning the lesson of rejection and the excitement of each closed sale is fantastic, especially at the age of six.
Between the online sales and the door to door sales they have a combined total of 42 items. If they reach a combined total of over 80 items they will each be able to ride in a stretch hummer at lunch time to go to a fast food restaurant.

Nicholas and Dylan are working hard to make that goal and I hope they do, the reward will reinforce their hard work and teach them a valuable lesson. Even if they do not receive that price they will still understand and greatly benefit from the exercise.
Thanks for reading, following, and purchasing.

I, the boys father, made the original post to begin my twins experiment to raise funds through selling online instead of door to door, see the original post here. The twins are participating in the fundraising (they just turned 6 and are in first grade), their younger brother is 3.
Our Experiment
They are learning to use Twitter (Longest Brothers Twitter) and this Blog (Longest Brothers Blog). They will update both before the fundraiser is over, October 8th, 2008.
How you fit in
The goal is to achieve as many sales as possible for their fundraiser, the proceeds go to their Elementary school named Liberty Elementary in South Riding, VA. They get a point for each item sold regardless of the price of the item, they have items under $10. To assist them please make a purchase.
Step 1
Go to Lavenders Online Here, the instructions for checkout so the the twins receive credit is on the right, the screen is framed. They accept PayPal. This site does not use typical affiliate links so you must enter the following at checkout:
- School name: Liberty Elementary
- City: South Riding, VA
- Student Name: Dylan Longest/Nicholas Longest
- ID: 082416700
Step 2
Follow them on Twitter, add them by going to the Longest Brothers Twitter here to follow their daily updates. They will let you know what prize they won if they achieved enough sales, the more sales – the more points – and the better prize they get. Any prize, no matter what it is will show them the power of online communications and relationships. This will also make an interesting case study.
Please complete the above before October 8th when their competition ends
